End of Yzerman?

Well, unlike that laudatory feature, Rosey suggests that this is definitely Steve Yzerman's last sason. Seems to me that competitiveness is probably getting the best of The Captain, but that shouldn't surprise anyone.

Monitoring Yzerman

Just wanted to point out a feature in the Christian Science Monitor about The Captain. Can't say it had anything I didn't already know, but it's interesting to see the take of someone far away -- and "icon" is a pretty apt description of the player who really has been the face of the franchise for more than 20 years.

Zetterberg yes, Datsyuk no

In the strange new world that is professional hockey, Pavel Datsyuk has apparently decided he'd prefer life in Siberia to life in Detroit. Gosh, sounds like a new punchline.

Hockey, and Osgood, return

The NHL is making its triumphant return to the North American sporting landscape (a co-worker expressed astonishment when he saw the Gretzky will coach in Phoenix). Steve Yzerman is making a triumphant return to the ice for the Reds Wings. And for some reason, Chris Osgood is coming back to Hockeytown too.

Hockey time: Wings hire Babcock

Playing hockey again in the NHL is almost a done deal, and the Red Wings have signed up a new coach, while still waiting for word from the heart-and-soul of the organization on whether he will play another season.

It's (sort of) hockey talk

Just wanted to get in a record of the Red Wings changing coaches. After a cancelled season of play, the NHL is starting to come around, even though there's still no guarantee of a collective bargaining agreement, but plenty of certainty that the league will be different.

And we’re back...

I was thinking of mothballing this site. I didn't do much during football season. And didn't feel the urgency to follow college hockey that closely. But then the Tigers signed Magglio Ordonez. And traded for Kyle Farnsworth. And then they cancelled the hockey season. And I felt the need to come back.

On the dotted line

If it's summer, then athletes must be negotiating contracts. Since everybody but baseball is in some part of their off-season, it heavy free-agent signing time. The Wings are quietly getting everybody inked. And NFL teams are trying to avoid long holdouts of their top draft picks, so it was a good sign that the Lions got Roy Williams into camp without too much delay. And today we get word that he's not too far behind.

Mark the calendar, maybe

The NHL schedule is out. And the Wings would start the season on the road (Oct. 14 at Edmonton), but the talk continues to center around work stoppage possibilities. Or at least the writing does.
