SportsLog http://www.originaljb.net/sportslog/ We're strangely transfixed by all this en-us 2006-09-15T20:56:02-05:00 Time to run for real http://www.originaljb.net/sportslog/archives/000306.shtml Y'know, it's not really football season until it's time for Michigan-Notre Dame. It's fine to have a game, maybe even two, as a tuneup, but once the students start moving in, it's time to bring on a real game. The IndyStar has a preview that focuses on Michigan's newfound running game. It's early, but they point out that U-M is #10 in the nation in rushing, while the Irish are... Michigan Football jb 2006-09-15T20:56:02-05:00 Heading back to football http://www.originaljb.net/sportslog/archives/000295.shtml Fall practice has started, so maybe we'll resurrect things here and point out some of the football previews. Today's entry: senior safety Ryan Mundy is coming back after missing almost all of last season with a nerve injury. Oh, and there's a note about available tickets (to get Iowa, you have to buy Ball State).... Michigan Football jb 2006-08-09T22:48:30-05:00 A little blog love http://www.originaljb.net/sportslog/archives/000160.shtml A few more days into spring training and it's obvious that Danny Knobler is going to be much beloved for his new Tigers Bulletin blog at mlive.com. Sadly, without comments, it'll never have the voice of the fan. But there are some fan efforts out there that I'll have to keep an eye on.... Tigers jb 2006-02-26T16:19:10-05:00 Pros make bad Olympians http://www.originaljb.net/sportslog/archives/000159.shtml Haven't posted about the Winter Olympics and here they're almost over. But I had to reference this line from Bob Kravitz of the Indy Star about the ugly showing of the men's hockey team: "The Americans didn't fail to reach the medal round for the fifth time in seven Olympics because Modano and friends had to go to travelocity.com. They failed for a number of other reasons, including the fact... Olympics jb 2006-02-24T00:00:25-05:00 We keep building them anyway http://www.originaljb.net/sportslog/archives/000158.shtml Apparently, sports arenas should no longer be considered long-term investments. The current debate is in Seattle, where basketball's (Super)Sonics say that little ol' Key Arena, renovated only 10 years ago, is no longer keeping up with the times.... Economics jb 2006-02-23T23:22:17-05:00 Football is a speed game http://www.originaljb.net/sportslog/archives/000157.shtml Football used to be played by big people, some of whom were fast. Those days seem to be over. In an NFL combine preview, the Philadelphia Inquirer notes that speed is what everybody is looking for, especially on defense.... Michigan Football jb 2006-02-23T23:07:56-05:00 Working on hitting http://www.originaljb.net/sportslog/archives/000156.shtml Or actually, being effective on offense when you're not hitting. See, it seems the Tigers didn't have trouble hitting the ball last year. Scoring runs was a different story. A team that was fourth in batting average (.272) finished 11th in runs.... Major League teams are beginning to trickle in to their spring training locales and their former stars are joining them. Good to see Lou Whitaker reuniting with his old minor league manager in his third spring with the Tigers.... Alamo Bowl 2005 jb 2005-12-17T17:21:43-05:00 Let's have a playoff http://www.originaljb.net/sportslog/archives/000140.shtml Lloyd Carr has apparently decided that it's time for major college football to have a playoff -- 16 teams on the field. Maybe getting passed over for that New Year's bowl caused a little more hurt than Big Blue was letting on.... Alamo Bowl 2005 jb 2005-12-13T22:29:14-05:00 The all-important recruiting game http://www.originaljb.net/sportslog/archives/000138.shtml In college football, recruiting is almost as rough a battle as the game itself. In Michigan, they're showing off a new building. In Nebraska, they're fretting about how little some of the high schools are getting visited by the new head coach.... Alamo Bowl 2005 jb 2005-12-10T21:36:16-05:00 Those Big Red writers http://www.originaljb.net/sportslog/archives/000137.shtml Here's one of the differences between college football in Michigan and in Nebraska: in one place, they occasionally get distracted by things like basketball. That place is not Nebraska. Most of today's Michigan sports pages focused on the basketball game between the Wolverines and Delaware State, and had nothing about the football team. In Nebraska, they were blessed with stories surrounding the start of bowl practice.... Alamo Bowl 2005 jb 2005-12-08T22:20:52-05:00 Getting more practice http://www.originaljb.net/sportslog/archives/000136.shtml Nebraska gets its bowl practices underway today, using its new indoor practice facility. These would be the extra practices that didn't happen after last year's team wasn't eligible for a bowl game, extra practices that the elite football programs get almost every year to develop young players and sharpen everybody's work habits....
