Henne lays an egg

» Posted by Jon on Thursday, September 15, 2005 at 11:00pm

Yeah, I know. He's probably never heard that one before. But Chad Henne was simply awful in Saturday's game against Notre Dame. Here's hoping that's the worst game of his football career, at Michigan or otherwise.

"That's very, very unlike him," coach Lloyd Carr said at his weekly luncheon. "But he's a sophomore. I think we're all surprised. I was surprised. And yet, I shouldn't be. He's a young kid."

And with that, we can put to rest all this talk about the potent Michigan offense, capable of winning shootouts every week. Apparently, this team is one player away from not being able to score. Last week it was Mike Hart and he may not play this coming week either.

Kevin Grady seems like a pretty good back. And Max Martin helped spell Hart last year. So it's not like these guys have never played before. But if one player goes down, others have to step up their game. The wide receivers need to help out. The line needs to have a little more fire. And that's the kind of thing that doesn't seem to happen at Michigan.

Rosey also had a column that should help explain, especially to those looking for drastic change in the Michigan football program, why that's not going to happen. And he even wrote it before the game.

Carr is many things. Loyal is high on the list. I think he'll stick with Herrmann, regardless of what happens this season. ...

A long time ago, before he was an extremely successful head coach, Carr was an embattled defensive coordinator. Fans wanted his close friend, head coach Gary Moeller, to fire him. Too much zone defense, the critics said. Too soft, too many points allowed, etc.

One year, after the Holiday Bowl, Carr stood outside the team bus and shot back at critics "who don't even know what a zone defense is." Michigan had just won the game. But the wounds were fresh.

That was Lloyd Carr's last game as Michigan's defensive coordinator. A few months later, Moeller had a little too much to drink, and then a lot more to drink, and then Moeller got belligerent, and then Moeller got fired.

Carr has been head coach ever since. ...

But I'm sure he still thinks of those days -- when he was a defensive coordinator under fire, and his close friend, the head coach, still believed in him.
