Tigers may have hit bottom

Late summer has not been kind to the Tigers. In September, they have yet to win. They’ve scored only 10 runs in losing their last eight games.

Magglio Ordonez isn’t happy, quoted in today’s game story as saying: “I think we stink. We should feel embarrassed, the way we are playing and the way we are hitting. We suck.”

Yesterday, Rosey’s column even hypothesized that Alan Trammell could get fired after this season:

Is this how Alan Trammell’s Tigers career ends? With a team out of contention, in a city filled with indifference?

I don’t have the answer. But the question is getting asked more by the day, as the Tigers find newer and less-exciting ways to lose…

Try picking a Tigers MVP. It’s almost impossible. Not one Tiger has had a wire-to-wire great season.

Sure, you could blame the offense for this current funk. (Yesterday’s game story contains this line: The Tigers have scored a total of five runs in their past six games and only two in their past 37 innings.) And Rosey calls out hitting coach Kirk Gibson. Probably coincidentally, the next day:

They then had nine hits, their second most in a game in the losing streak. They drew five walks, a bounty for a team with the fewest walks in the American League.

But really, this team has been unable to put consistent, solid performances in all phases of the game for any length of time. The pitching faltered while the hitters were hot and when the pitchers shut people down, the offense couldn’t scratch out a thing. And then your best players get caught up in a baserunning error.

I don’t know if you can blame coaching or just keep bringing in new players or hope people get healthy. Neither do the baseball people, which is more distubing.
