Today’s best coverage is a profile of Steve Breaston by my old pal Rosey. It may talk alot about his speed and love of blocking (yes, blocking), but there’s a nice tie-in to this weekend’s Notre Dame game.
Breaston can run past 11 players and both bands without anybody laying a finger on him.Just like Desmond Howard. Just like Rocket Ismail.
Keep that in mind when you watch Michigan-Notre Dame on Saturday. Breaston, a redshirt junior, is the kind of player who turns this rivalry into his personal Heisman campaign.
Howard’s diving catch for a touchdown on a fourth-down-and-short play ranks as high on the Wolverine’s all-time list as Rocket’s two (yes, two) kickoff returns for touchdowns in that one game at the Big House lo those many years ago. (O.k., I think both were while I was in high school.)
A couple of other things to point to:
Did we mention there was a plea for tougher defense? The Freep has its story about Lloyd Carr’s plans, including two changes to the depth chart and praise for a sophomore linebacker, the only member of the defense so singled out.
We’d also like to refer you back to the Freep’s preview of the season: Redemption begins now for U-M: Defense wants to forget 2004 lapses. Might have to refer back to that often as the season progresses.
The Plain Dealer is doing a Weekly Wolverine Watch
They also pan the MAC in its showdowns with the Big Ten.
The Daily did quite a breakdown of Michigan’s schedule including the possible pitfalls of not having a road game before opening the conference season.
