Goaltender Al Montoya has decided to return to Michigan this fall for another run at a national championship, stalling his trip through hockey’s minor leagues. The Maize and Blue lost just one player from last year’s team and will have 11 seniors on this year’s roster.
Sharad Mattu in the Daily points out that Montoya’s draft position (#6 overall) was more based on potential than current payoff for an NHL team. In fact, he hypothesizes that two younger CCHA goalies might be better.
“I think it was a good decision for him,” coach Red Berenson told the Daily. “He can now come back here and have a breakout year. He still has a lot to prove himself at the college hockey level.
“It was a good decision to come back to a place where he knows the challenges that lie ahead and has good support around him.”
