Based on a story a couple weeks ago, it seemed Al Montoya was ready to leave Michigan and sign a contract with the Rangers. Now, it turns out he’s getting plenty of urging to stay in school.
Seems some believe Montoya, who has two years of eligibility remaining, could get more money by signing before the NHL gets a new collective bargaining agreement.
But he’d play in the minors. And Michigan’s coaches of course are pointing all the positives of elite college hockey:
“We’ve always said, ‘Why give up a chance at a national championship at Michigan to go play in the minors?’ Here there’s a really stable environment and he has a chance to really leave a mark before he moves on,” associate coach Mel Pearson told the Daily.
And I’m sure they’d rather not lose the guy described as the best goalie prospect on the continent and led team USA to a gold medal at the junior worlds.
Yeah, he’s pretty good.
