Welcome, let’s see what we can find out

It’s time to try a new project, one I hope I can get some help with. A few years ago, I did a short-term blog previewing the College World Series. It gave me a chance to look around and showed readers what was going on with upcoming opponents and occasionally how other places viewed the “home town” team. I’d like to do it again, but on a much larger scale.

I check a number of sports sites each morning, subscribe to a couple of email lists and have found a number of blogs that cover my favorite teams. But I know there’s more out there. And I don’t get a chance to read what others are saying.

During the recent NBA finals, I kept thinking that while reading all of the Detroit coverage was fine, I was also interested in the Lakers perspective. Or at least the people who have spent the last few months following around the annointed royalty in purple and gold.

So it’s time for a site that collects stories and points of view about my teams and whoever they happen to be playing next.

For a while, I tried doing this with Michigan hockey, finding a couple of sources that cover the team regularly and then looking up places that cover the upcoming opponents.

For college hockey and football this isn’t too bad because games are only played on the weekends. You’ve got days where people are looking at various angles, featuring players, pointing out trends — all good blog material.

For basketball, pro hockey and especially baseball, I’ve decided this is harder to do. Games are much more frequent so there’s plenty of just-played game material (very factual, but pretty much the same everywhere), but less looking ahead, less analysis, just fewer things to link to.

But even so, while I typically read one paper’s coverage of the Tigers on a given morning, there are two more regiments of beat writers there and who knows how many broadcast outlets and blogs willing to throw things into the mix.

Nevermind keeping an eye on the Red Wings, Lions, Michigan and Michigan State football and basketball teams (and the aforementioned hockey).

But I’m going to give it a shot. We’ll have pages set up for each team and some to collect all the posts on each sport. (Ah, the beauty of multiple categories.) And if you’d like to help, just drop me a line and I’ll see if we can accomodate.
