Scouting a story

I just got around to reading a story by an old friend of mine about the director of European scouting for the Stanley Cup champion Detroit Red Wings, Hakan Andersson. This has to be his best story:
One time Andersson was flying to Russia to see a prospect for the third time, and his flight was delayed. After five hours on the runway in the snow, Andersson heard "this unbelievable roar.

"And I look at the window and there's this big ring of fire -- flames in the middle, and in the back of it there's a fan. It was a fan blowing wind through this ring of fire so the hot air would de-ice the plane. It was old-style Russian de-icing.

"So I was scared looking out. And at about 4:30 in the afternoon they said, 'OK, no flight. Get off the plane. Try again tomorrow if you want.' But then the game was going to be over, of course."

Thankfully, Andersson had already seen the prospect. Another scout on the plane, from St. Louis, had not.

And that's how the Wings got Pavel Datsyuk.

It hit 90 today. As the sun set, we found a honey-hoisin-ginger glaze for the chicken, tossed it on a bed of lettuces from our garden (baby romain, salad bowl and buttercrunch) and served it with a chardonnay-semillon blend with a touch of black currant syrup, known in some circles as "kir." Oh, and I've started a photo blog so maybe I'll post more often. Maybe.

Deep thoughts, elsewhere

I started trying things out a few days ago, experimenting with "lifestreaming" and other web services out there in the great cloud of the interwebs. And I had a profound thought: "It used to be we built web pages to share what we found with people. Now, there are whole services to share what we do. Gosh."

The next day Jeffrey Zeldman had a similar thought: "We are witnessing the disappearance of the all-in-one, carefully designed personal site containing professional information, links, and brief bursts of frequently updated content to which others respond via comments. Did I say we are witnessing the traditional personal site’s disappearance? That is inaccurate. We are the ones making our own sites disappear."

Anyway, if you're interested in watching the experiment, you can now find snippets of me on twitter, tumblr and soup.

Can't decide which of those last two I like better. If you've got an opinion, feel free to drop a note, comment, tweet, y'know whatever. Where ever.
