I've been meaning to post some photos from our day at Volcanoes National Park for quite some time now. There's 53 in the "Best of" smart album. But we don't have time for that. The volcano is changing. Turns out the steam plume we saw is pretty much gone because there's a new lava flow.

Sunday, hundreds of small earthquakes hit Kilauea, which has been erupting -- what you and I might call "oozing" but geologists call "erupting" -- since 1983. The Pu'u 'O'o vent we saw formed a lava tube straight into the sea. Now, a new area 3.7 miles away is causing all sorts of excitement.

The newspapers on the Big Island demand registration, but feel free to check out West Hawaii Today (Kona) and the Hawaii Tribune-Herald (Hilo) if you want. Otherwise, the Honolulu papers have it covered:

Here's two more shots from our visit to the coast down Chain of Craters Road (which was closed earlier when it suffered a few cracks -- plus, you never know where the lava is going to show up):
