The volcano is changing
» Posted by Jon at 10:15 pm :: Comments (0)

Sunday, hundreds of small earthquakes hit Kilauea, which has been erupting -- what you and I might call "oozing" but geologists call "erupting" -- since 1983. The Pu'u 'O'o vent we saw formed a lava tube straight into the sea. Now, a new area 3.7 miles away is causing all sorts of excitement.
The newspapers on the Big Island demand registration, but feel free to check out West Hawaii Today (Kona) and the Hawaii Tribune-Herald (Hilo) if you want. Otherwise, the Honolulu papers have it covered:
- The Advertiser: New eruption area created on Kilauea's East Rift zone and Volcano: 'Something's got to give'
- The Star-Tribune: Lava oozes from new site at Kilauea and Quakes rattle anew for an hour
Here's two more shots from our visit to the coast down Chain of Craters Road (which was closed earlier when it suffered a few cracks -- plus, you never know where the lava is going to show up):
