This is where we went first, so it's the first picture.

Day 1: Sunday

Itinerary: Show up, see what happens. Perhaps, after heading to the hotel, off to Le Tour Eiffel, Champ de Mars, Trocadero

O.k., but we didn't do any of those.

We did instead get to the hotel and take a nap, which was at least as important.

Our tour guide mentioned that he was having a gathering of the group at 6 at the hotel, so we figued that was a good time to meet our fellow travelers, get to know him and maybe get some hints.

So, we walked down to Notre Dame and took the first few pictures of our trip. (You didn't really need shots of the Detroit airport, did you?)

The big rose window. Just a little example of our new zoom.

Leaving our hotel, and with minimal wrong turns, we headed down Boulevard de Sebastopol (turns out our hotel is north of Rue Reaumur; I thought it was south), wandering past the Fontaine des Infantes, a bit of Les Halles with St. Eustache in the distance. Across Pont au Change, past the Conciergerie, the Palais de Justice (note: yes, "Egalite, Liberte, Fraternite" is carved above the front doors) and Sainte Chapelle before turning toward the giant cathedral. Got a few shots in before turning back, across the Pont Notre Dame (and a picture of Hotel de Ville in the distance with the dark sky in the backgroud, though I think that one's on film somewhere) and up past Centre Pompidou. Yeah, that thing's crazy.

Anyway, we made it back to the hotel in plenty of time for the group meeting. Minutes to spare, at least.

It was one of the longest two hours of my life.

My, people can ask bad questions at the most inopportune times.

Anyway, after that a group of six of us decided to go get dinner at a cafe around the corner that our tour guide described. Not bad. Sorry to disappoint that there are no pictures of the food.

After an appetizer of tomatoes with mozzerella and a large slice of proscuitto, I had cote de agneau provencal, which we decided was grilled lamb chops with green beans and some french fries. Jen chimed in with a lovely chicken breast with mushrooms, broccoli and potatoes in a white gravy. Quite tasty.

Oh, and I should get this in: The Airbus A330 is one of the more uncomfortable aircraft I've been on.
