NYT: Cities Compete in Hipness Battle to Attract Young

“It’s a zero-sum game,” said William H. Frey, a demographer with the Brookings Institution, noting that one city’s gain can only be another’s loss. “These are rare and desirable people.” They are people who, demographers say, are likely to choose a location before finding a job. They like downtown living, public transportation and plenty of entertainment options. They view diversity and tolerance as marks of sophistication.

DFP: People Mover rides high: Detroit’s short rail system gains riders

It’s been there almost 19 years. This year’s 57% jump in ridership is credited to February’s Super Bowl crowds, the return of hockey, more conventions and better baseball. In other words, if people are around, they’ll use the transit.

NYT: Daimler Hopes Americans Are Finally Ready for the Minicar


DaimlerChrysler, which shelved an earlier plan to bring its Smart minicar brand to the United States, plans to announce Wednesday that it will introduce the tiny two-seat vehicle to the American market early in 2008, according to several executives at the company.

CSM: The upside of ‘density packing’: Living closer together helps the environment, shortens commutes, and promotes affordable housing

Somewhat related to the previous post and you’ll get no arguments from me. Living as close as possible to where you work (and play) only makes more sense. Or at least close to the bus stops. And it seems we should encourage filling in urban areas at least as much as we encourage conquering farm land and extending sewer lines and expanding roads.
