NYT: Planet Google Wants You

People may think they use Google because they like it, but really, “it’s the reverse,” said Rashi Glazer, a business professor at the University of California, Berkeley, and a director of its Center for Marketing and Technology. “You use something and in seeing yourself using it, you say to yourself, ‘Hey, I’m using it all the time, must be because I’m loyal to it.’ It becomes a virtuous circle.”

WP: Ever So Humble | The Heart of Google’s Wild Success Is a Home Page of Calculated Simplicity

“We really believe people are going to remember only five to seven services. Educating them about more than that will lead to nothing but user confusion.” — Marissa Mayer, vice president for search products and user experience

SFC: Cool Web 2.0 sites

“The Chronicle today highlights some of the startups from this hot sector of the tech world — companies that fulfill the Web 2.0 philosophy of community, sharing and user-created content, and that fit in the modern gestalt with things like video, music and digital photos. The only real requirement is that the companies are something you probably haven’t heard of before. And if you have, consider yourself hip.” Hey, then I’m just a little bit hip.

“With so many blogs, I’m hoping for fewer protests and strikes in Paris this fall,” said Loïc Le Meur, a pioneer French blogger and European managing director of the blog-hosting company Six Apart. “If people can express themselves online, then maybe they don’t need to block the streets.”

NYT: A Visionary Seeking to Connect the World, Wirelessly

“Probably a million people come to Central Park on a sunny summer day, and if even 1 percent of them come with wireless-capable devices, that’s a thousand people who can be connecting with our service.” So, is internet access going to be like water fountains in public places? Laptops still seem a bit cumbersome for this and cell phones have their own network. But some how, some day this should work. I’ll let you know when they finish Fountain Square.

CSM: ‘Dream applications’ start to come true on the Web

Some might see current advances in Internet technology as evidence the programmers are catching up to the marketers. But there’s also plenty of sociology — users, especially young ones, are enthused by all this sharing that companies are enabling.

Macworld: Podcasts to be banned during Singapore election

“In a free-for-all Internet environment, where there are no rules, political debates could easily degenerate into an unhealthy, unreliable and dangerous discourse flush with rumors and distortions to mislead and confuse the public,” said the country’s senior minister of state for information, communications and the arts. See, the United States is an example of democracy for the world. Our elections degenerate all the time.

Wired: Technology’s Just a .240 Hitter

Definitely qualifies as a rant. One notable line: “The trouble with technology, you see, is that it attempts to impose perfection on what is a delightfully imperfect game.” The rest — just ranting.
