NYT: Iowa Finds Itself Deep in Heart of Wine Country

“Stan Olson used to grow corn and soybeans on hundreds of acres here on the Raccoon River west of Des Moines, but no more. These days, Mr. Olson’s empty grain silo is useful only as a rustic image to promote his new vineyard and tasting room.”

NYT: Seduced by Snacks? No, Not You

People almost always think they are too smart for Prof. Brian Wansink’s quirky experiments in the psychology of overindulgence. … “We don’t have any idea what the normal amount to eat is, so we look around for clues or signals,” he said. “When all you see is that big portions of food cost less than small ones, it can be confusing.”

CSM: For not that much more, Americans opting to eat out

“For the first time this year, American restaurants will bring in above a half-trillion dollars in total sales, according to the National Restaurant Association. … In the next decade, more than half the average household food budget will be spent on meals bought outside the home compared with 25 percent in 1955, the NRA reports.”

CE: Sophisticated Mesh restaurant

“Mesh makes all those fusions and does some further meshing of its own. It’s suburban but has a hip, urban look. NYT: Wine Ratings Might Not Pass the Sobriety Test

A rating system that draws a distinction between a cabernet scoring 90 and one receiving an 89 implies a precision of the senses that even many wine critics agree that human beings do not possess. CSM: Pass the pate, hold the pickiness

A 2006 study published online by the Journal of Physiology and Behavior found that children’s preferences for meat and fish appear to be genetic, but their fondness for vegetables is nurtured at home. Jean-Michel Diot, owner of Restaurant Tapenade, a breezily elegant French spot in La Jolla, north of San Diego, puts it more simply: “If the parents eat well, the kids eat well. If the parents eat junk food, the kids will eat junk food.”

NYT: The World’s Cups

“This month, summer weather and World Cup soccer arrived simultaneously, and as a result New York has undergone an uncharacteristic flowering of cafe culture. Normally hardworking New Yorkers are whiling away their afternoons in restaurants, watching and arguing and drinking their national drinks.”

AP: I’ll have a venti cup of U.S. culture

Historian Bryant Simon is searching for the meaning of modern life amid the round tables and comfy sofas of Starbucks coffee shops. Well, it’s certainly a slice of modern life. (typed, unironically, in a coffeeshop, via SPI)
